Dr Tim Schwanen

Dr Tim Schwanen has accepted the offer of appointment to the Associate Professorship in Transport Studies, in association with a Tutorial Fellowship at St Anne's College and incorporating the Directorship of the Transport Studies Unit (TSU).

Tim joined the TSU in March 2009 and has been jointly appointed by TSU and the School of Geography as Departmental Research Lecturer since November 2012. Before coming to Oxford he worked as Lecturer in Urban Geography at Utrecht University, the Netherlands where he previously had completed his PhD research (2003, cum laude). Tim is the current editor-in-chief of Journal of Transport Geography and serves on the editorial advisory board of six other journals.

Tim's research can be positioned at the intersection of urban, transport, cultural, political and economic geography with a specific focus on questions of mobility. His current research interests include sociotechnical transition to low-carbon and low-energy societies, the creation and valorisation of knowledge and expertise about transport, geographies of wellbeing and ageing, and conceptualisations of time and temporality in geography. He is one of three Co-Directors of the RCUK funded Research Centre on Innovation and Energy Demand in which the University of Sussex collaborates with the Universities of Manchester and Oxford.

Tim wishes to thank Professor David Banister, the outgoing Director of the TSU, for his leadership of the TSU over the past nine years.
