The TSU's Dr Denver Nixon recently returned from a two week trip to Brazil for research reconnaissance in São Paulo and the Urban Dialogues workshop in Belo Horizonte. In São Paulo Denver explored neighbourhood character and walking and cycling infrastructure with Brazilian transportation engineers Hellem de Freitas Miranda and Victor Frazão Barreto Alves, including a visit to the CicloCidade bicycle repair workshop. He also made a day-trip to São Carlos, where DePICT Infrastructure Policy and Adverse Impacts on Cyclists team leader Professor Antônio Nélson Rodrigues da Silva introduced the transportation landscape of that city and they both discussed the larger DePICT project. The following week, the Newton Fund Researcher Links and British Council funded Urban Dialogues: Creating Inclusive Urban Spaces in Uncertain Global Times brought together two dozen early-career researchers and senior faculty to share their research, discuss opportunities for collaboration, and build new international collegial relationships. Denver and the other participants unpacked the idea of inclusion and examined how it may be achieved with respect to urban housing, mobility, public space, and governance. Several opportunities for international collaboration were identified. Denver will return to Brazil in 2017 to conduct interviews and focus groups for the DePICT Community-Led Infrastructures theme.
