Executive Education Programme: "Climate Change" online course 2023

Estimated reading time:
2 minutes

The Global Challenges in Transport Executive Education Programme ran the Climate Change online course between 21 February and 31 March.

Throughout the course three main messages stood out. First, climate change is an enormous and urgent challenge that cuts across all types of mobility and thus, both mitigation and adaptation efforts need to increase substantially in the next few years. Second, it is impossible to understand the deep effects that climate change has in various mobility systems without taking a truly intersectional approach that recognises, inter alia, racial-, economic- and gender-based systems of oppression. And third, because of the global and intersectional nature of the challenge, it is also a big opportunity to build more equitable urban environments.

With a group of 13 participants and 10 lecturers, we had ample opportunities for in-depth discussions that ranged from micro-mobility case-studies in Bristol, to global shipping and aviation. From road freight transport in Europe, to cycling spaces in Zambia. As one of our participants put it:

“I broke paradigms in relation to the concept of ‘northern hemisphere’ and ‘southern hemisphere’. I loved being connected with people from other countries, […] especially since we were all focused on [climate change]”.

The final group presentations gave us a glimpse of all the great work our participants are doing and how the course will influence the practice moving forward.

Our next Global Challenges in Transport course will be on Health and Wellbeing and will run online for six weeks from 18 September to the 27 October 2023.
