Caring and Youth-centric Mobilities for Inclusive Urban Proximity (CAMINUP)
Overview
CAMINUP is a 30-month international research project funded through the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership. The project combines insights from a growing body of research on mobilities of care with youth-centric perspectives on urban space and mobility. While mobilities of care have often been treated as equivalent to women’s mobilities, CAMINUP explores them in relation to the mobilities of children and young people – mobilities which are themselves diverse, intersectional, and unequal. More on the way the project is conceptualised can be found in this recent position paper authored by several members of the research team.
CAMINUP focuses on the experience of young carers who navigate everyday mobility in four case study cities: Bucharest (Romania), Ghent (Belgium), London (UK), and Plovdiv (Bulgaria). The project uses a mixed-method research design grounded in knowledge co-creation with a range of partners from the academic, public and non-governmental sectors. Young carers are themselves actively involved as researchers in the project.
The TSU team is collaborating with the London Borough of Hounslow to gather data on the mobilities of young carers in London, the barriers they face, and the wider implications for urban governance and policy-making. The project contributes to sustainable and equitable urban mobility by exploring collaborative decision-making which overcomes traditional disciplinary silos and brings together perspectives from transport planning, urban planning, social care, and education.
